THINGS ARE CHANGING - (old map was only quickly edited for now)
JULY 2023 - The large old parking deck is being demolished and a NEW PARKING AREA with Green Space, gardens, picnic areas etc, will be created behind us. By the end of summer the NEW PARKING AREA should be completed -- there will no longer be an upper deck, just the lower level, with less then half of the parking spots we previously had -- however the City feels much of the available parking was not being utilized before, so they feel what they are able to provide on this one level should be adequate. Please note, there will be a handicapped ramp-way and stairs combo that will take you up to Shelden Avenue from the Lakeshore Drive parking areas, this will be located between us and Joey's Seafood, as noted by the lighter pink on the maps below. In the meantime the City is making efforts to keep people from hogging up Shelden Avenue parking spots (by having those of us that work and live in downtown stick to the side streets and other parking decks) -- so you should be able to find open parking along the main drag so you can still pull up in front of your destination store or restaurant (or close to it). If you don't see parking nearby on Shelden please watch the side streets, the deck across from Ambassador or even down on the waterfront (between the old deck area and the bridge). The City is working to enforce the 2 hour parking time frame too, not allowing folks to just roll their car forward or back every 2 hours in order just stay where they were for the whole day, they will have to pull out into traffic and go to a different block (by the way I understand the new rule they are working on). If you need to be at a salon longer then 2 hours or are visiting family from out of town, please contact the City of Houghton Police Dept. to see what accommodations they can make for you (perhaps a temp permit even) - (906) 482-2121 IF YOU ARE CURIOUS TO SEE THE DECK DEMO look for the many videos on our Facebook page, starting June 20th and work your way back up the page to stay in order GENERAL DIRECTIONS TO OUR SHOP: Coming from Hancock? if you are traveling south over the Portage Lift Bridge, turn right onto a small access road just after the Powerhouse (MTU Smart Zone), then turn right on Lakeshore Drive, if you want to park on the waterfront... OR get into the lane that will take you to Montezuma Avenue and follow that back around and into downtown Houghton, to find a spot to park on Shelden Avenue. Coming from the Mall/Walmart direction? part way down the hill look for the "RV Park" signs and turn on that road, traveling down to the beach/waterfront, then stay on Lakeshore Drive, traveling under the bridge to the parking areas along the waterfront... OR stay on the main road as it turns into Montezuma Avenue and follow that back around and into downtown Houghton, to find a spot to park on Shelden Avenue. Coming from MTU? you can stay on Shelden Avenue (and park out front, especially if you require ADA accessibility). I will update this once the new parking area is all done ~ if you see that I've forgotten to do that please feel free to nag me about it =) our location as seen on a Google map:
